The Balanite Aegyptiaca is a fruit of the date of the desert called “Tired” in Fulani (Northern Cameroon language). The fruit is usually eaten fresh by suction, once we got rid of its epicarp. It has a slightly sweet taste. Other people often use it to produce a drink after a cooking its leaves. It can also extract it edible oil through its almonds. Once dried and powdered the leaves of this fruit can be used for cooking in different sauces. With nearly 22% of amino acids and fat intake, this fruit is rich in carbohydrates and protein.
This fruit has a medical aspect. It can be used by people with high cholesterol levels. To stimulate milk production in the lactating woman, we can use the liquid after pressing the fruit and to treat digestive disorders, we use the nuts. Its oil will be used to treat skin problems, rheumatism, high blood pressure. Its leaves provide for dental caries; its barks cure tonsillitis, bronchitis and various diseases of the lung, nausea. Its roots are effective in cases of fevers and its fruits against constipation, painful periods, colic.
The leaves of ‘Tired’ are used for the treatment of goitre which is manifested by increased volume benign thyroid gland at the base of the neck. It is thus necessary to eat three to four “Tired” a day to prevent this disease by mixing with rice or couscous, a sauce made from its leaves. When it is reached, it must chew the dry powder of the fruit after having pounded. These are the wonders of this fruit.
